Armenian painter Elen Grigoryan charts path from pharmacy to art

Elen Grigoryan, a painter from Martuni in Armenia's Gegharkunik province, has built an artistic career exploring human psychology and inner transformation through color and technique. Originally trained in pharmacy at M. Heratsi State Medical University, Grigoryan shifted to art, believing it offered a more meaningful way to address taboo and overlooked social issues.

In May 2024, Grigoryan held her second solo exhibition, "Contours of Existence," at the Pyunic Development Center, showcasing 30 works spanning from age 15 to the present. She specializes in batik—painting on silk—a technique she uses to convey complex ideas about how environment and society shape individual identity. Her work "The Inner Map of Man" required six months of development and expresses her philosophy that personal identity is fundamentally shaped by social connections and surroundings.
