ANC-International Opposes Turkish Candidate for UN Secretary-General

The Armenian National Committee-International has called on UN Security Council members and member states to reject Turkey's nomination of Feridun Sinirlioğlu for UN secretary-general, citing his record on Armenian Genocide recognition and impartiality concerns.

ANC-International points to Sinirlioğlu's 2020 letter denying the Armenian Genocide as Turkey's UN representative and his 2010 lobbying against a U.S. House resolution affirming the genocide. The organization also references reported July 2026 remarks in which Sinirlioğlu, while OSCE secretary general, allegedly offered to examine how the organization could support removing the Armenian Apostolic Church's leadership.

The statement argues that conflicts involving Turkey—including Cyprus, the South Caucasus, Syria, and Ukraine—would compromise Sinirlioğlu's required independence under UN Charter Article 100. ANC-International urges governments to reject the candidacy and calls on Sinirlioğlu to publicly clarify his positions on genocide denial and the reported church leadership comments.
