UCLA to publish English edition of Andonian's genocide documentation
UCLA to launch English edition of Andonian’s “The Great Crime”

UCLA's Promise Armenian Institute will host the official launch of an English translation of Aram Andonian's "The Great Crime," a foundational 1921 work documenting the Armenian Genocide. The event takes place October 22, 2026, at UCLA's Tannas Alumni Suite.
Andonian's text presents testimony from Ottoman bureaucrat Naim Bey and approximately 52 Ottoman documents concerning Armenian deportations and killings. The original Armenian edition was among the earliest systematic genocide documentation efforts.
The Turkish government challenged the documents' authenticity in 1983, limiting scholarly use for decades. UCLA's Taner Akçam addressed these disputes in his 2018 book "Killing Orders," arguing for the materials' historical value.
The new English edition includes Akçam's substantial introduction synthesizing his findings and new evidence, plus a prepared appendix. Registration is required for the free event.
