British physicist and science communicator Brian Cox has been awarded the 2026 Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication in recognition of his efforts to make science accessible to global audiences. The award was presented October 2 at the Royal Astronomical Society in London by STARMUS Festival co-founders Sir Brian May and Garik Israelian.

Established a decade ago by Stephen Hawking, the medal honors individuals who advance public understanding of science through communication, arts, music and film. Cox reflected on Hawking's legacy and the importance of scientific knowledge in today's world. He will not attend the formal ceremony during STARMUS VIII in Tenerife on October 17 due to touring commitments, but footage of the London presentation will be broadcast at the festival's opening celebration.
