International Cycling Race Tour of Armenia Begins
On the first day of the โTour of Armeniaโ international cycling race, athletes covered 135 km
The inaugural Tour of Armenia, a UCI Europe Tour category 2.2 event, launched its first competitive stage Wednesday, with cyclists covering 135 kilometers from Gavar to Mets Masrik along Lake Sevan's shores.
Poland's Michal Pomorski won the opening stage with an average speed of 52.331 km/h, while Britain's Medway Fletcher finished second and earned the white jersey for best young cyclist.
Armenian Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan opened the event, calling it historic for the country after two years of preparation. The four-day tournament features 16 teams, including an Armenian national team, and will cover more than 500 kilometers total. Leader jerseys incorporate Armenian cultural symbols and motifs, designed by Italian cycling apparel company Alรฉ Cycling.
