Gulbenkian Museum Reopens in Lisbon After Renovation

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon reopened on July 18, 2026, following over a year of renovation work, marking the 70th anniversary of the foundation established by Armenian oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian. The modernist museum, designed with brutalist architecture that integrates with surrounding gardens, houses more than 6,000 artworks spanning ancient Egyptian and Greek pieces, Indian art, Chinese and Japanese porcelain, European paintings, Middle Eastern works, and Ottoman art. The collection includes works by Manet, Rembrandt, and Rubens, alongside Persian and Caucasian carpets and René Lalique jewelry. Beyond its art collection, the Gulbenkian Foundation remains a major philanthropic institution in Portugal, supporting education, science, and charity. Its Armenian Communities Department has developed programs assisting those displaced from Artsakh, including psychosocial support and cultural heritage documentation.
