Ukrainian Armenians Face Uncertainty Over Community Displacement

The Armenian community in Ukraine continues navigating life under Russian military pressure, with daily air alarms and drone strikes affecting daily operations, according to an interview with Davit Mkrtchyan, vice president of the Union of Armenians of Ukraine.

While many Armenian families have fled the country since the war began, some have since returned. However, Mkrtchyan said the community lacks precise data on net population changes. Ukrainian border services have declined to provide ethnic breakdowns of departures and returns in 2022, 2023, and 2024, he noted.

Despite the challenges, Armenian community structures remain operational, including youth organizations, women's groups, schools, and kindergartens. Winter months present acute difficulties as power and heating outages intensify hardships for those remaining.
