Artist Siranush Aghajanyan Transforms Yerevan With Mosaic Art
Beyond butterflies: Siranush Aghajanyan’s mosaicked Yerevan
Siranush Aghajanyan has become known for large-scale mosaic installations across Yerevan, blending traditional tile techniques with contemporary street art. After studying at Armenian art academies, she discovered mosaic as her medium and created approximately 40 public works over 11 years, with about 30 remaining today.
Aghajanyan views street art as artistic activism addressing social and political issues rather than mere decoration. Following the 2020 war, she developed her signature "Butterflies" series—monumental mosaic sculptures up to 3.5 meters across. The works reference butterfly symbolism across cultures: peace, love, rebirth, and transformation. One butterfly installed in Stepanakert was destroyed after Azerbaijan took control of Artsakh in 2023. The series has gained international recognition, with the Cafesjian Center for the Arts commissioning a solo exhibition.
