Armenia's Traditional Dance Revival Draws Growing Crowds

A decades-long effort to revive Armenian traditional dance has gained significant momentum in recent years, transforming public squares across Yerevan into gathering spaces for people of all ages.

The Karin Traditional Song and Dance Ensemble, founded by Gagik Ginosyan, began offering free public dance lessons in 2010 after Ginosyan spent years documenting traditional dances from elderly villagers. Early attendance was sparse, with only a handful of participants, but the initiative has since grown to attract hundreds or thousands of dancers at monthly events.

Participants report that the experience provides more than choreography lessons. Dancer Nushik Mirzoyan, who joined the movement in 2024, describes the experience as fostering community connection and cultural pride. "When I dance, I feel strength, freedom and pride," she said, noting that the shared experience functions as "a school of life."
