Sculptor Sargis Hovhannisyan on Art, Faith and Metal

Sculptor Sargis Hovhannisyan discusses his artistic practice and creative philosophy in an interview with The Armenian Weekly. Born in Yerevan to families with roots in historical Mush and Aparan, Hovhannisyan draws on his heritage and Christian faith as sources for his work. He began creating art at age five and studied physics and mathematics before developing his sculptural technique through formal training. Working in a modest home studio, Hovhannisyan primarily creates sculptures in metal, stone, and wood, drawing inspiration from everyday encounters, films, and cultural events. His work reflects spiritual and moral values, aiming to preserve higher human ideals. He has exhibited over 35 sculptures and 30 canvases in two solo shows—at the Naregatsi Art Institute in December 2023 and the Pyunik Development Center in May. Hovhannisyan values constructive feedback from close collaborators in refining his pieces.
