A U.S. jury has ordered Apple to pay $5.7 billion in damages after finding the tech giant infringed on patents held by Taction Technology, an audio firm specializing in haptics systems. Taction claimed in 2021 that Apple unlawfully used its vibration technology in devices including the iPhone and Apple Watch. Haptics enable devices to simulate touch through vibrations for actions like message notifications or button presses.
Apple disputed the verdict, stating its Taptic Engine technology is fundamentally different from Taction's system and announcing plans to appeal. The company argued that Taction's own testing during trial confirmed Apple did not use the patented vibration tech. Haptics have become standard in modern consumer electronics, including smartphones, wearables, and gaming controllers.
