Western Armenian Faces Endangered Language Status in Diaspora
The grief of not having the right words: Is Western Armenian fading?

Western Armenian is classified as a "definitely endangered" language by UNESCO, despite an estimated 1.6 million speakers worldwide. However, only approximately 200,000 are believed to be fluent active speakers, raising concerns about long-term viability.
Unlike Eastern Armenian, which holds official status in the Republic of Armenia and receives state institutional support, Western Armenian exists almost entirely within diaspora communities through families, churches, and cultural organizations.
A significant challenge is the "Armenian school paradox": while diaspora students study Western Armenian in community schools, fluency often weakens in adulthood due to limited practical use outside those institutions. The language also lacks contemporary media presence compared to dominant languages, with limited publishing opportunities and digital content available in Western Armenian.
