UN Nuclear Watchdog to Inspect Iran Under US Peace Deal
UN nuclear chief says inspectors will visit Iran sites as part of war deal
The International Atomic Energy Agency will conduct inspections at Iranian nuclear sites as part of a preliminary peace agreement between Iran and the United States, according to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. Speaking in Japan, Grossi confirmed that inspections will proceed and that the agency will soon finalize "dates, procedures, and places" for the oversight work. The agreement explicitly requires that Iran's highly enriched uranium be diluted under IAEA supervision. Iran's deputy foreign minister countered that access to damaged facilities and nuclear materials would only be negotiated in a final comprehensive deal. The preliminary accord also includes provisions allowing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of a U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is currently visiting Gulf nations to discuss the agreement.
