Trump announces Hamas disarmament agreement for Gaza
Hamas agrees to Trump’s plan to disarm in Gaza, with Israel yet to comment – BBC
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration has brokered an agreement for the "complete disarmament" of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, according to reporting by the BBC. A senior Hamas official confirmed to the BBC that the organization has agreed to the disarmament plan, with an official statement expected soon.
Under the agreement, Israel would withdraw from Gaza as disarmament is completed, Trump said. U.S. officials indicated the administration would be "very disappointed" if Israel does not participate in the withdrawal as part of the deal.
Trump characterized the agreement as "a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government." The disarmament provision forms part of the second phase of a U.S.-brokered Gaza ceasefire plan. Israel has not yet publicly commented on the agreement.
