Tavitjan Family Pioneered Balkan Rock and Jazz Scene
How one Armenian family defined Balkan rock and jazz

The Tavitjan family has shaped the rock and jazz landscape of the Balkans for six decades, beginning with patriarch Garabet Tavitjan, who founded the influential group Leb i Sol in Skopje during the 1970s. Descendants of Armenian Genocide survivors, the family built their legacy through innovation in Macedonian folk music fusion.
Garo and Diran Tavitjan, Garabet's sons, have become internationally recognized pioneers of the "Balkan Beat" sound. They have performed at Carnegie Hall and the Blue Note in New York, collaborated with Grammy-winning artists, and produced the landmark 2008 album "Macedonian Heartbeats in 7/8," which led to a 70,000-person stadium concert in Skopje.
In a recent interview, Garo Tavitjan discussed balancing traditional Macedonian folklore with contemporary global audiences while maintaining Armenian cultural connections through collaborations with local artists.
