A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket body is believed to have struck the Moon early Wednesday morning, according to reports from Public Radio of Armenia citing Reuters. The school-bus-sized object, weighing 4 metric tons, was the second stage of a rocket that launched a Firefly Aerospace lunar lander in January 2025. It hit the lunar surface at approximately 5,400 miles per hour near Einstein Crater on the Moon's western limb. SpaceX confirmed the collision was unintentional. NASA stated the impact poses no danger to Earth and presents an opportunity to collect lunar data and refine space object tracking techniques. The incident adds to growing concerns about orbital debris, as the Moon now hosts roughly 3,000 human-made objects weighing around 190 tonnes combined.
