Fifty years ago, on September 16, 1976, a trolleybus carrying over 90 passengers plunged into Yerevan Lake near a dam in Soviet Armenia. Shavarsh Karapetyan, a 23-year-old finswimmer and 11-time world record holder, witnessed the crash while training nearby. Without hesitation, he dove into the freezing water and executed dozens of 25-second rescue dives into the submerged vehicle, breaking windows and extracting passengers in near-total darkness. His efforts resulted in 46 people being rescued, though only about 20 survived despite medical intervention. Karapetyan suffered severe injuries—sepsis, double pneumonia, and lung damage—that ended his elite athletic career and hospitalized him for 45 days. The Soviet government initially suppressed details of the accident, but the story eventually gained national attention through media coverage, generating thousands of letters recognizing his heroism.
