Series of Noncombat Deaths Raises Concerns in Armenian Military

Armenia has experienced a troubling surge in noncombat deaths among service members over the past two weeks, reigniting concerns about military conditions and personnel safety.

Between August 13 and 25, at least seven service members died in noncombat circumstances, including deaths from gunshot wounds, a vehicle accident, and apparent suicides. In one case, authorities charged a fellow service member with negligently driving another to suicide. Reports have raised allegations of hazing as a possible factor in at least one death.

The Defense Ministry stated the incidents were unrelated to military service, though investigations remain ongoing. Human rights monitors documented 33 noncombat deaths in Armenia's military as of late August. The succession of deaths has intensified calls for greater transparency and investigation into whether recurring suicides and violence indicate broader institutional problems rather than isolated incidents.
