Scholars publish comprehensive study of Armenian Genocide concentration camps
Der Matossian, Gzoyan publish “The Concentration Camps of the Armenian Genocide”
Bloomsbury Publishing has released "The Concentration Camps of the Armenian Genocide," a 520-page edited volume by Prof. Bedross Der Matossian of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Dr. Edita Gzoyan of the American University of Armenia.
The book represents the first in-depth examination of the Ottoman concentration-camp system, particularly in present-day Syria. It includes 21 chapters by historians and social scientists from seven countries, covering camp origins, daily conditions, deportation routes, and humanitarian efforts at sites including Deir ez-Zor and Ras al-Ain.
The volume incorporates survivor memoirs, diaries, and biographical studies alongside scholarly analysis. Contributors examine Ottoman administrative practices and situate the Armenian case within comparative genocide studies. The project was supported by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of History and related foundations.
