Robert William makes history as Glendale’s first Armenian Police chief
Robert William was appointed June 23 as the 21st police chief of Glendale, California, making him the first Armenian to lead the department. A lifelong Glendale resident, William began his career over two decades ago as a student volunteer and police cadet, becoming a sworn officer in 2003. He rose through the ranks to captain in 2020, then deputy chief in September 2025, before serving as interim chief starting in January 2026. William holds a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Management and a master's degree in Public Administration, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. In an interview, William reflected on Armenian community support throughout his career, particularly during the 2020 civil unrest. He expressed hope his appointment would inspire others and noted the importance of not being "the last" Armenian police chief in the city.
