Renowned Composer Loris Tjeknavorian Receives Armenian Citizenship

Loris Tjeknavorian, an internationally acclaimed Armenian composer and conductor, has formally received citizenship of the Republic of Armenia after decades of cultural involvement with the country. Born in Iran and educated in Vienna, Salzburg, and Michigan, Tjeknavorian established a career in London and New York before returning to Armenia in 1989 following the devastating earthquake. He became deeply engaged in Armenia's cultural life and independence movement. Despite his lifelong Armenian identity and commitment to the nation, Tjeknavorian had not previously held Armenian citizenship, distinguishing between personal identity and legal status. He described receiving citizenship as profoundly emotional, recalling his role in defending Armenia's state symbols in parliament and his lifelong sense of displacement. "For one week now, I feel that I have a country," he said after taking the oath of allegiance.
