OpenAI has received White House clearance to launch its GPT-5.6 artificial intelligence model series, weeks after postponing the rollout in June for security review. The delayed launch came amid U.S. government concerns over advanced AI systems' potential misuse by foreign adversaries.
The new model represents OpenAI's most capable version to date, with enhanced abilities in cybersecurity, biology, and autonomous AI tasks. White House officials had requested the delay over concerns that sophisticated AI could identify software vulnerabilities exploitable by foreign militaries or intelligence services, including Russia and China.
The decision follows similar restrictions placed on Anthropic's advanced models in June, which were only recently eased. OpenAI stated in response that ongoing government access reviews should not become standard practice, as they restrict tool availability to users and businesses.
