New Book Documents Khachkars of Historic Noratus Cemetery
New book release: “Eternal Armenia” and the khatchkars of Noratus
Photographer and author David Karamian has released "Eternal Armenia: Khachkars — The CrossStones of Noratus," a 264-page book documenting the world's largest surviving concentration of Armenian khachkars near Lake Sevan. The project resulted from nearly three years of photography, research and design work at the historic cemetery.
The book features nearly 200 photographs showcasing individual khachkars, graves, inscriptions and the broader landscape. Published in both English and Armenian by NorArtGallery Publishing, the work aims to preserve Armenian cultural heritage while introducing khachkar artistry to international audiences including libraries, museums, universities and preservation organizations.
Karamian's work was motivated partly by the destruction of the Armenian cemetery at Julfa, which demonstrated the vulnerability of centuries-old monuments. The book represents a deeper focus on a single site, following his 2022 publication "Armenia – The Lone Stone."
