Gyumri Psychologist Builds Memory Café for Seniors
Armenuhi Sargsyan’s journey supporting seniors in Gyumri

Armenuhi Sargsyan, a psychologist in Gyumri, Armenia, has established and coordinated the Memory Café, a specialized program for older adults focused on cognitive health. Originally aspiring to study law, Sargsyan shifted to psychology after family circumstances kept her in her hometown, where she later found her calling supporting vulnerable populations.
The Memory Café, operated by Alzheimer's Care Armenia, launched in Gyumri around 2020 as the first regional expansion of the Yerevan-based model. The program distinguishes itself from traditional senior centers by emphasizing cognitive maintenance rather than recreation. Weekly two-hour sessions include neuropsychological assessments using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, art therapy, and intellectual games. Participants, currently numbering 30 active members, receive structured homework and track progress through group communication. The approach aims to help older adults maintain memory and cognitive abilities while slowing cognitive decline.
