George Deukmejian Scholarship Fund Established in California
Legacy of California’s only Armenian-American Governor George Deukmejian honored with new scholarship fund
A Los Angeles event honoring the legacy of George Deukmejian, California's 35th governor and the first Armenian-American to hold the office, announced the establishment of a new scholarship fund bearing his name.
The evening at the Zorayan Museum at St. Leon Armenian Cathedral drew judges, elected officials, philanthropists, and community leaders. Deukmejian's widow, Gloria, and their daughters attended the gathering, which featured an exhibition of historic photographs, documents, and memorabilia tracing his career from New York to the California Legislature, Attorney General's office, and governorship.
The George Deukmejian Scholarship Fund will support California students pursuing careers in law, public policy, community leadership, and civic engagement. The initiative provides scholarships, professional guidance, and leadership development opportunities, with emphasis on early-career support for aspiring public servants.
Deukmejian (1928–2018) served as governor from 1983 to 1991, focusing on fiscal discipline, education funding, and judicial appointments.
