Former ICC judge Navi Pillay wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize
Navi Pillay, a former International Criminal Court judge, has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting international law and peace. The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited the importance of maintaining the international legal order at a time when global institutions face mounting pressure. Pillay, 85, was born in South Africa and has served as a judge on multiple international courts, including the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She chaired a UN Commission of Inquiry that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gazaβa finding Israel rejected as "scandalous." The Nobel Committee warned that the shift toward power politics over legal frameworks undermines global stability and peaceful coexistence.
