A drone carrying an explosive device was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany, authorities said. A robot was deployed after airport staff spotted the device near Ukrainian cargo planes overnight, according to Saxony police. A second unidentified object also struck a cargo aircraft at the same location, causing minor damage.
The incident reflects heightened security concerns across German airports following recent unauthorized drone flights over military bases, airports, energy facilities, and logistics hubs. Police have suggested the overflights may have been coordinated by Russian agents.
Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a critical hub for German military and NATO operations, including transport of military supplies. It also hosts Ukraine's Antonov Airlines cargo operations and functions as a major DHL logistics center.
