European Council backs temporary trade measures to support Armenia
The European Council has agreed to introduce temporary trade liberalization measures supporting Armenia's economy following restrictions imposed by Russia. The measures will suspend import duties on approximately 80% of Armenian exports to the EU for two years, with safeguards to protect EU producers.
The arrangement covers nearly 99% of Armenia's fresh fruit, vegetable and plant exports, plus over 91% of beverages and spirits. The preferential access requires Armenia to comply with rules of origin, maintain administrative cooperation with the EU, avoid new trade restrictions, and uphold democratic principles and human rights standards outlined in the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement.
The European Parliament is expected to approve the proposal without amendments during its September session. Once adopted, the regulation will enter into force immediately upon publication in the EU Official Journal.
