European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is planning a visit to Armenia next week, according to reporting by Politico citing three sources familiar with the plans. The delegation will include EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
The high-profile visit aims to demonstrate European support for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan following his pro-European party's decisive victory in June parliamentary elections. EU officials described the trip as a signal of backing amid what they characterized as sustained Russian pressure on Armenia.
"Europe is here for you," one official said of the intended message. The visit will be von der Leyen's second to Armenia in under two months, following her May attendance at the European Political Community summit hosted in Yerevan and an inaugural EU-Armenia summit.
