Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II and six bishops will not attend a court hearing scheduled for August 28, according to their lawyer Ara Zohrabyan. The clergymen will exercise their rights under Armenian Criminal Procedure Code Article 272, Part 4, with only their defense attorneys representing them in court.

The Catholicos and bishops face charges related to the defrocking of Gevorg Saroyan, former Primate of the Diocese of Masyatsotn. Prosecutors allege the clergymen obstructed a judicial act by removing Saroyan from his position. The defense maintains that defrocking is an internal ecclesiastical matter governed by Armenian Apostolic Church canonical law, over which the state has no jurisdiction.
