A fire swept through a multi-storey building in Delhi, India's capital, killing at least 21 people and injuring several others. Many victims were foreign nationals from South Asian countries who had traveled to India for medical treatment or to support relatives receiving care at a nearby private hospital.

The building operated as a bed-and-breakfast facility serving patients and their families. Firefighters rescued more than 40 people and brought the blaze under control relatively quickly. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Delhi authorities are examining whether the building held necessary permits to operate as a guest facility, with criminal charges possible for any violations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced compensation of 200,000 rupees ($2,088) for families of those killed and 50,000 rupees for the injured.
