Artist Moko Khachatryan Forges Independent Creative Path

Artist Moko Khachatryan, daughter of renowned Armenian painter Rudolf Khachatryan, has developed a distinctive artistic identity while emerging from her father's shadow. Born Mariam Khachatryan, she adopted the moniker "Moko" at age 2, which became her official signature by 25. Khachatryan states that artists are born, not made, and that she creates out of internal necessity rather than choice. Physical distance from her father during childhood—he relocated to Moscow when she was one year old—allowed her creative freedom. After his death, she experienced a major turning point, relocating from Moscow to Yerevan where she entered her most prolific period over 15 years. Her work spans abstract compositions utilizing deep color palettes. Her mother, an art historian, has long anticipated Khachatryan's eventual shift toward minimalism.
