Playwright Vahram Sahakyan arrested on hate speech charges
Playwright Vahram Sahakyan has been arrested in Armenia as part of a criminal investigation into alleged hate speech on Facebook. According to Armenia's Investigative Committee, Sahakyan posted content on January 8, 2025, that investigators say was designed to incite hatred, intolerance, and hostility. An expert examination completed September 1, 2026, determined the post contained hate speech. On September 29, prosecutors initiated criminal charges against Sahakyan under Article 329, Part 2, Point 3 of Armenia's Criminal Code, which addresses public speech promoting hatred or intolerance distributed through media or digital platforms. The preliminary investigation remains ongoing. The Investigative Committee stated that Sahakyan is presumed innocent until guilt is proven through court proceedings.
