Armenia Pursues EU Membership as Russian Ties Weaken

Armenia's government is moving toward applying for European Union membership, signaling a shift away from Russia-led regional organizations. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced in August that Armenia would "perhaps begin the process" of submitting an official EU application in the near future. The move comes as Armenia has gradually distanced itself from Moscow following the 2020 war with Azerbaijan, suspending participation in the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization in February 2024.

Russia has responded with economic pressure, including import bans on Armenian agricultural products, while urging a referendum on EU membership. In March 2025, Armenia's parliament approved a law to begin EU accession proceedings. However, analysts question whether Brussels will readily admit the South Caucasus nation, though the EU has historically shown flexibility on democratic standards with other candidate countries.
