ANCA Welcomes Bipartisan Congressional Action on Armenian POWs

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) praised a bipartisan amendment to the House Foreign Service Act that calls for Azerbaijan to immediately release all Armenian prisoners of war and political prisoners.

The amendment, led by Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), advanced through the House Foreign Affairs Committee with support from Chairman Brian Mast (R-FL). Sherman cited documented abuses and verified executions of Armenian POWs, including videos reviewed by Human Rights Watch, as justification for the measure.

Sherman initially included language directing enforcement of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, but modified the amendment to remove that provision in exchange for Mast's backing. The amendment will proceed to a full House Foreign Affairs Committee roll call vote before advancing to the full House.

ANCA stated it remains committed to broader accountability measures, including sanctions and strict enforcement of Section 907.
