US hits dozens of trading partners with new wave of tariffs
The United States has imposed new tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on 60 trading partners, effective immediately. The duties, which affect the vast majority of American imports, target major economic partners including the UK, China, the European Union, Canada, Japan, and India. The Trump administration justified the action by citing concerns that these countries have not adequately addressed forced labor practices.
The tariffs follow a February Supreme Court ruling that struck down many previously imposed duties enacted under emergency powers. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced the action, stating it would "correct what is both a human rights abuse and distortive trade practice." The administration invoked Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to enforce the tariffs, marking the latest escalation in renewed global trade tensions since Trump returned to office.
