US and Iran hold first talks since June after Trump’s ‘annihilation’ threat
Top Iranian and US officials met at the United Nations in New York for talks mediated by Qatar, marking their first discussions since a June ceasefire collapsed. The meeting included Iran's foreign minister and US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff.
No breakthrough emerged from the discussions. Witkoff characterized the round of talks as "constructive and promising," while Iran reiterated demands for the US to cease "acts of aggression."
The talks occur amid escalating tensions following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28. Iran subsequently attacked Israel and US bases in the Gulf region, as well as blocking the Strait of Hormuz. The region remains a critical geopolitical flashpoint with implications for global stability and energy markets.
