US and Iran Exchange Military Strikes, Ceasefire Collapses
Iran fires at American military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait after US hits dozens of Iranian targets
The United States and Iran have escalated tensions after both countries conducted military strikes this week, effectively ending a ceasefire agreement signed last month. The US Central Command reported firing at more than 80 Iranian targets, including over 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps small boats. Iran responded by targeting American military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait. President Trump stated the ceasefire is "over," while NATO Chief Mark Rutte defended the US strikes as "absolutely necessary." Iran's parliamentary speaker countered that the US breached the agreement first. The escalation followed attacks on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has not directly claimed responsibility for. A 14-page memorandum of understanding aimed at extending the ceasefire and resolving the conflict was signed between Tehran and Washington last month.
