Twelve killed in Spanish wildfire amid European heatwave
Twelve die in Spain wildfire as heatwave continues in southern Europe
At least 12 people died in a wildfire that swept through Los Gallardos in Almería, southeastern Spain, with six others injured. Some victims were found inside vehicles trapped by the flames. Witnesses reported the fire began after a power line fell, with the blaze rapidly spreading to nearby woodland. Authorities have not officially confirmed the cause.
The deadly fire is part of a broader crisis affecting southern Europe, where a sustained heatwave with temperatures around 40°C (104°F) has triggered widespread wildfires. Hundreds of firefighters are responding to major incidents across France, Portugal, and Spain, with thousands of residents evacuated from their homes.
Andalusian regional government head Juanma Moreno called the deaths "a tragedy," expressing devastation over the loss of life.
