Scholar to lecture on Azerbaijan's 'Western Azerbaijan' narrative

Political scientist Simon Maghakyan will deliver a virtual lecture examining Azerbaijan's territorial narrative against Armenia, scheduled for September 19, 2026. The presentation, titled "Deconstructing 'Western Azerbaijan': Synthetic Memory and the Politics of Perpetual Conflict," is hosted by the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research's Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Lecture Series.

Maghakyan, an associate member of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford, specializes in heritage and security. His recent research on Azerbaijan's destruction of Armenian heritage in Nakhichevan has been cited by the International Court of Justice and United Nations Security Council. He is the author of "Sovereign Heritage Crime: Security, Autocracy, and the Material Past" (Cambridge University Press, 2026).
