Opinion: Armenia Must Rely on Self-Strengthening, Not Foreign Powers
Russia, the U.S. and the EU should keep out of Armenia’s domestic affairs
An opinion piece argues that Armenia should not depend on foreign intervention from Russia, the United States, or the European Union, asserting that all nations prioritize self-interest over treaty obligations.
The article contends that Armenians have historically looked to external powers for protection, a pattern that has repeatedly failed. It points to Armenia's disappointment with Russia's limited response during the 2020 Artsakh war and subsequent territorial losses in 2021-2022, despite the mutual defense obligations of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
The author suggests Armenia must instead strengthen itself domestically and develop sophisticated diplomatic skills comparable to those of Turkish leaders. The piece criticizes what it describes as Armenia's emotional rather than strategic approach to international relations, arguing that effective foreign policy requires pragmatism and careful navigation of geopolitical interests rather than reliance on external saviors.
