Nassim Taleb Declines Azerbaijan Lecture Over Vardanyan Detention
Best-selling author Nassim Nicholas Taleb rejecrs invitation to lecture in Azerbaijan over Ruben Vardanyan’s imprisonment
Renowned author and risk analyst Nassim Nicholas Taleb has declined an invitation to lecture in Azerbaijan, citing the imprisonment of Armenian philanthropist Ruben Vardanyan as his reason. In posts on X, Taleb stated he would not visit the country while Vardanyan remains jailed there, adding that increased financial offers from organizers would not change his decision. "I will not set foot in Azerbaijan with Ruben Vardanyan jailed there," he wrote. Taleb, best known for his bestselling book The Black Swan, visited Armenia in December 2023. Vardanyan has been held in Azerbaijan since September 2023 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Baku court in February 2026. International human rights advocates have questioned the fairness of his detention and trial proceedings.
