Moldova's Prime Minister Steps Down, Triggering Government Resignation
Moldova’s prime minister steps down, triggering the government’s resignation
Moldova's Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced Friday that he is stepping down, automatically triggering the resignation of the entire government. Munteanu did not provide a specific reason for his departure, which occurs less than a year after he took office following the EU candidate country's contentious election, widely viewed as a choice between Western and Eastern alignment.
"The moment I understand that I can no longer exercise my mandate in accordance with my principles and beliefs, I choose to walk away," Munteanu said in a social media statement. He emphasized accepting the role with strong conviction to improve the country.
Under Moldovan law, a prime minister's resignation takes effect immediately. However, the government will continue operating in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed.
