Last Armenian Genocide Survivor Dies at 112
The Three-Body Problem

Mary Ouzghoushian Vartanian, believed to be the last surviving witness of the Armenian Genocide, died at age 112. Born in 1914 in Aintep (modern-day Gaziantep, Turkey), Vartanian fled the genocide with her family, eventually settling in Boston after stops in Syria and Lebanon.
Vartanian became known for her needlework, embroidering crosses, Armenian symbols, and the phrase "Armenians, Never Forget the Genocide." The Armenian Weekly essay reflects on her life alongside two other recent developments: Israel's official recognition of the Armenian Genocide and Armenia's muted response to that recognition.
The article explores how trauma and displacement have shaped Armenian diaspora identity and memory, using Vartanian's legacy as a symbol of remembrance.
