Israel's Armenian Genocide Recognition: Fact vs. Rumor

Israel's foreign minister announced last month that the government would recognize the Armenian Genocide, sparking international media coverage. The Israeli Cabinet subsequently approved the recognition unanimously and forwarded it to the Knesset for final approval.

Turkey and Azerbaijan opposed the decision, with Azerbaijan citing its military and oil trade relationship with Israel. Following their objections, rumors circulated that Israel had abandoned the measure. However, The Armenian Weekly reports no official Israeli confirmation of withdrawal exists. The Knesset's packed agenda and subsequent recess until October elections prevented consideration of the genocide recognition during the recent session.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan offered a muted response, stating Armenia saw "no need to respond," contrasting with his enthusiastic endorsement when the U.S. Senate recognized the genocide in 2019.
