150-year-old Armenian church in Turkey undergoes restoration
The Church of the Forty Martyrs in İskenderun, Turkey, built in 1876, is undergoing restoration after sustaining significant damage in the February 2023 earthquake. The 150-year-old church will receive 5 million Turkish liras ($105,000) in state funding for the restoration project.
The church will close for religious services by the end of this week as work begins. Repairs will address damage to the roof, floor, altar, and walls, with drainage improvements also planned. Adjacent buildings, including shops that generate income for the church, will be restored alongside the main structure.
According to Yusuf Tabash, chairman of the Forty Martyrs Armenian Church Foundation, the restoration aims to fully repair the damage caused by the devastating earthquake.
