European Court Rules Against Armenia in Electric Yerevan Cases
European Court Rules Against Armenia in 'Electric Yerevan' Protest Cases

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) issued a judgment on June 11, 2026, finding Armenia violated Article 5, Point 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights in the cases of Ashghyan and Poghosyan v. Armenia. Article 5, Point 1 protects the right to liberty and security of person.
The ruling concerns incidents related to the 2015 "Electric Yerevan" protests, a series of demonstrations in the Armenian capital that erupted over electricity price increases. The ECHR determined that Armenia's actions during the protest response constituted a violation of the applicants' fundamental rights.
This decision adds to ongoing international scrutiny of Armenia's handling of civil demonstrations and represents a legal precedent in European human rights jurisprudence affecting Armenian citizens.
