The European Court of Human Rights has found Azerbaijan responsible for violating the European Convention on Human Rights in a case stemming from the April 2016 military escalation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The court ruled that Azerbaijan violated the right to life and prohibition of torture in the death of H.T., a major in the armed forces, who was captured during the four-day conflict. According to forensic evidence, H.T. was subjected to torture, including mutilation while alive, before his death.

The ECHR also found violations regarding the psychological suffering of H.T.'s family members—his parents and sister—who were unable to recover all remains for proper burial. The court awarded €60,000 to his parents and €30,000 to his sister for non-pecuniary damages, plus €14,210 in legal costs. The case is one of 21 pending applications before the court related to alleged atrocities from the April 2016 hostilities.
