Congress Marks 1,000 Days of Armenian POW Detention

Members of Congress and Armenian advocacy groups marked the 1,000th day of Azerbaijani detention of Armenian prisoners of war and civilian hostages in Washington. At least 19 Armenian detainees remain in custody, including eight former Artsakh leaders on trial in Baku. Advocacy groups have called the trials politically motivated and urged stronger U.S. pressure on Azerbaijan.

Separately, Armenia and Azerbaijan launched a confidential mechanism allowing citizens to report information about missing persons and burial sites, supported by the International Commission on Missing Persons.

Elsewhere in the region, Israel's Cabinet approved a proposal for formal genocide recognition, though Knesset approval is still required. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan responded cautiously, cautioning against the "weaponization" of genocide recognition. Azerbaijan and Turkey both condemned Israel's decision, with Turkey's response framed within broader Israel-Turkey tensions.
