Armenian Tech Startups Expand Beyond U.S. Market Focus

Armenia's technology sector is shifting strategy as startups diversify their market focus beyond the United States, reducing risk and accelerating growth. The number of active high-tech companies in Armenia grew to 10,778 in 2025 from 8,072 in 2024, with sector turnover increasing nearly 28% to $3.2 billion, according to Armenia's former high-tech industry minister.

Industry leaders argue the old model of relying on diaspora connections and targeting U.S. markets created constraints. Ruben Osipyan, CEO of the Science and Technology Angels Network, says founders need to develop skills for engaging international investors beyond the Armenian-American community.

Structural changes are supporting this evolution. In July 2025, the Armenian government formalized a three-year partnership with Plug and Play Tech Center, a leading global accelerator, which opened a Yerevan office to run acceleration programs. A third pre-acceleration cohort of 18 startups completed the program in mid-2026.
